being aware.

by now we're all overwhelmed by PINK.  it's October, after all, and that means Breast Cancer Awareness month.  all this pink, awareness, fundraising, walking and such is all super wonderful and is for a great cause.  trust me, we need a CURE!  and while purple is my "signature color", i've really embraced pink as of late.

but are you really GETTING it?  you have to CHECK YOURSELF!  girls and guys!  yep, guys can get it too.  don't wait for that yearly "lady parts" doctor visit.  don't wait for your mammogram.  check yourself regularly.  know what and where your particular lumps and bumps are!  and they are lumpy and bumpy.  things like chocolate and caffeine contribute to that.  if you find/feel/see something weird, ASK ABOUT IT.

we found my lump at the very end of June.  i went for my first appointment right after the 4th of July and after a mammogram and biopsy was diagnosed July 16th.  after all the pathology came back from my surgery on August 2nd, we learned that my tumor was 1.7cm, i was at a Stage IIA, my cancer was an ER/PR/HER2+ i know that means nothing to pretty much everyone but that has to do with hormones and receptors and such.  it determines how your particular cancer is treated.  oh the things we've learned about breast cancer! and was an invasive ductal cell carcinoma involving a lymph node or two.

WHAT if i had waited until my yearly appointment in February/March?!?  i'll be pretty close to finished with the most intense part of my treatment by the time that appointment rolls around.  it could have been much, much worse!  but i asked about it.

it's not weird.  it's not dirty.  it's LIFE SAVING.  so really...if you've got 'em, check 'em.
